The song was originally written and performed by Hank Ballard and the Midnighters in 1958. Boosted by Checker’s cover, “the twist dance craze” spread like wildfire, to the dismay of critics who thought it was too provocative. Checker recorded several new versions throughout the years, among others “Let’s Twist Again” (1961).
