Did you know that...
The lyrics might sound like they’re just about leaving a bar at the end of the night. But the song is actually pretty deep.
Semisonic’s singer Dan Wilson wrote the track when his wife was expecting their first child and eventually realized that his work had another meaning: “It’s all about being born and coming into the world, seeing the bright lights, cutting the cord, opening up into something deeper and more universal.” Shortly before the scheduled recording, the couple’s daughter Coco was born – three months prematurely.
Little Coco weighed just 11 ounces (barely 301 grams). Despite his daughter’s complications, Wilson managed to record the song. The single was released nearly a year later, on the same day that Coco could finally leave the hospital.
